Aboriginal employment in the NTPS

The Northern Territory (NT) Government strives to achieve a workforce that reflects the community it serves through:

  • inclusive and culturally appropriate programs
  • policy development
  • service delivery strategies.

Aboriginal people make up almost 27% of the NT population and as the largest employer, the NT Government is in a strong position to take a leadership role in improving the employment and career opportunities for Aboriginal people.

Aboriginal Employment and Career Development Strategy 2021 to 2025

The Aboriginal Employment and Career Development Strategy 2021 to 2025 PDF (15.4 MB) was launched on 24 June 2021.

The strategy highlights the NT Government’s commitment to growing Aboriginal employment and working towards:

  • the global target of 16% Aboriginal employment within the Northern Territory Public Sector (NTPS)
  • 10% representation in senior positions.

Key focus areas

The strategy has 6 key focus areas:

  • targets
  • attraction
  • retention
  • leadership
  • workplace culture
  • remote.

Objectives

The objective of the strategy is to continue to grow and develop a strong, highly skilled and capable Aboriginal workforce.

To assist in driving the strategy, 3 groups were established:

  • Champions of Inclusion – consists of chief executive officers (CEOs) from across NT Government
  • Agency executive sponsors – senior employees nominated by agency CEOs
  • Senior Aboriginal Reference Group – consists of senior Aboriginal employees in the Northern and Southern regions.

These groups support Aboriginal employment and career development within their agencies and across the sector.
