Workforce planning and strategy

The Northern Territory Public Sector (NTPS) recognises that our people, and the capabilities they bring, are our most valuable assets.

Having a capable, adaptive, and diverse workforce is critical to ensuring agencies can respond to challenges and deliver services and outcomes for the government and Territorians.

NTPS Workforce Strategy

Strategic workforce planning considers the operational and strategic business objectives by assessing trends and gaps to ensure agencies have the right resources to deliver services and outcomes.

The NTPS Workforce Strategy 2021 to 2026 PDF (810.9 KB) puts our customers at the centre of all that we deliver for Territorians.

The strategy represents a sector-wide view on the capabilities commonly required across all agencies to tackle immediate and emerging challenges, and highlights 4 key areas and actions of focus through to 2026.

  • Delivering excellence: attracting and retaining the right people in the right place at the right time.
  • Leadership and culture: customers always at our centre and inspiring our employees to excel.
  • Committed and capable: growing and enabling our employees.
  • Planning for our future: creating a sustainable workforce.

The roles

The Office of the Commissioner for Public Employment works with agencies to coordinate delivery of key outputs across the sector.

Agencies will continue to implement initiatives inline with existing or future workforce planning processes.

The strategy does not replace agency-level strategic and operational planning processes. It is designed to support agencies to identify and build the workforce and capabilities needed for the future.

Previous workforce plans

The Human Capital Plan 2015 to 2020 provided a robust but flexible framework that helped identify high-level trends and developments that affected the sector’s ability to deliver against the strategic priorities set by government.

The plan was complemented by a companion background paper.
