Russell Wills

Department of the Chief Minister and Cabinet

I am a local person that went to Stuart Park Primary and then onto Darwin High School. In late 1985 I was seeking work over the university break and came across a temporary position as a courier with the Department of the Chief Minister. Not in my wildest dreams would I have imagined this was the start of a long and exciting journey with the NT Government.

Over my 35 year tenure I have been employed in many different departments doing a variety of work. Travelling to remote communities across the width and breath of the NT, meeting people on beautiful country has been a highlight.

I have worked with some amazing colleagues (many are lifelong friends), have assisted my growth as an employee and more importantly helped me to be a better person. In 2015, I developed the" First Circles" Leadership program which aims to encourage and promote the development of Aboriginal emerging leaders.

The First Circles team and facilitators were remarkable with their absolute commitment to supporting the development of Aboriginal participants.

To observe Aboriginal men and women, standing strong, proud and confident delivering presentations to government Ministers was inspirational.

In more recent times I have worked on secondment to Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation undertaking project work which I have found extremely rewarding.

Once again working with some incredibly dedicated people undertaking critical support services to people most in need.

The NT Government has changed significantly over the years but it still provides for a range opportunities.
