Michelle Smith

Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics

I commenced working with the Commonwealth Department of Construction in 1977 within the typing pool, then as Telex Operator sending live telex messages from Executives to Head Office in Adelaide and to Melbourne, Canberra and overseas. A year later I was compulsorily transferred to the Department of Transport and Works within the Finance section.

I then transferred to project administration, which included maintenance, building, mechanical, electrical and civil works from all departments through Repairs and Maintenance, Minor New Works and Capital Works programs. Projects included the Territory Wildlife Park, State Square, Darwin Bus Terminal, Palmerston City Development, East Arm Port and Royal Darwin Hospital works. During this time I was seconded to assist in finance and project roles within Primary Industries and Fisheries, twice to Department of Education and the Health Department.

In 1997, I commenced with Police, Fire and Emergency Services as a Projects Manager responsible for the Repairs and Maintenance, Minor New Works and Capital Works programs, Forward Works Program, program and project management, preparation of Ministerial and Cabinet documents and Briefings. Some project highlights include Humpty Doo Tri Services, Marrara Fire Station, Casuarina Police Station, Berrimah Fire and Emergency Services Complex, Harts Range Police Station, Kulgera Police Station, Forensic Science Laboratory and many repairs, refurbishments and construction projects throughout the Northern Territory.

Due to the recent MOG changes I was transferred back to the Department of Infrastructure Planning and Logistics within the Strategic Asset Management Team and then to the Portfolio Management Team, going full circle.
