Rodney James Gregg

Department of Education

Rodney's teaching career in the NT started in 1991, when he took up a 2-year contract at Kalkarindji Community School, teaching post primary students in a 'Silver Bullet' demountable classroom. In 1993, he moved to Katherine School of the Air, travelling to many remote communities from Ngukurr in the East to cattle stations just over the WA boarder in the west. After teaching in other Katherine schools, in 1999 Rodney moved to the newly opened Casuarina Street Primary School in Katherine East, becoming the first male classroom teacher.

In 2001 Rodney won the position as health and physical education coordinator for the NT, as part of the Sport, Health and Physical Education School (SHAPES) based in Darwin. He would drive or fly to all regions, promoting H/PE to classroom teachers, providing them with lesson plans and resources. In 2006 he returned to CSPS teaching upper primary students. In 2013 he was offered the H/PE position at the school in the specialist's teaching role.

Rodney's other passion has been coaching athletics. He was the School Sport NT head track and field coach from 1999 to 2017. This included taking NT teams to four Pacific school games, with international competition. He was recognised by School Sport Australia with a service medal for his contribution to track and field in 2010. Tennis NT has recognized Rodney and CSPS with the best primary school tennis programs in 2018 and 2021. In 2018 CSPS was awarded the Newcomb Medal for the most outstanding primary school in Australia.
