Barbara Doukas

Department of Education

Barbara is a born and bred Territorian. She studied at the Darwin community college in Winnellie in 1984 and completed her teaching degree at the Northern Territory University Casuarina campus in 1986.

Barbara has been a proud and passionate classroom teacher for 28 years. She has taught students from transition to Year 7. Barbara has been a senior teacher in early childhood, middle primary, upper primary and in high support annexe settings. From 2008- 2012 Barbara worked as an EALD specialist. This role provided an opportunity for Barbara to create an EALD network hub for colleagues in other schools to come together regularly to share best EALD practice, moderate EALD work samples and learn from each other.

In 2016 Barbara moved into a corporate role for 4 years. Her role as a coach with the Darwin Region Teaching and Learning Team gave her the opportunity to lead the Assessment Capable Writers Project. This allowed her to engage and collaborate with school leaders and staff to identify problems of practice around writing and develop improvement plans and implementation strategies to improve student writing outcomes. The Assessment Capable Writers Project was built on five pillars of school improvement: research, coaching, collaboration, professional learning communities and leadership development. The project developed the capacity of teachers and leadership teams across nine Darwin schools.

Barbara is currently the assistant principal of Moil primary school.
