Colleen Williams

Department of Education

Colleen completed her Bachelor of Education in Darwin and began teaching in 1987. She is extremely passionate about being an effective practitioner and although she has worked in the corporate sector of education as the Northern Territory (NT) Discovering Democracy (DD) Project officer (2002-4), she has chosen to spend her remaining working life in the classroom at Berry Springs Primary.

Achievements include:

  • national award in the DD Awards
  • Teacher of Exemplary Practice Level 3
  • established the Parliamentary Education Office (PEO) and its officers in the NT Legislative Assembly, which continues to provide quality civics and citizenship education
  • organised workshops that led to the creation of the NT Parliamentary education kit and Government House education kit
  • organised a conference on democratic classrooms and global citizenship, featuring keynote speakers from the University of California and Global Education SA
  • served as treasurer of the steering committee for the National History Project, securing significant funding
  • negotiated with the NT Electoral Commission and Federal Electoral Commission to provide workshops for teachers across the NT
  • collaborated with the Local Government Association of the NT to develop a Community Government Council unit delivered to every remote community in the NT
  • original member of SEANT (Social Educators Association of the NT), now known as GHANT
  • secured funding from AusAID/Global Education for the Asia in Schools Project and SEANT workshops
  • part of a Quality Teacher team, traveling across the NT to facilitate sessions on best practices in pedagogy and curriculum implementation
  • involved in implementing and evaluating Real Justice in NT Schools and secured funding for NT schools through the Commonwealth Values Education project
  • Contributed to the development of reading and writing assessment tasks at the school, state, and national levels.
