Department of Health

When I travelled to Alice Springs in 1986 with my husband, I never dreamed we would have settled here, birthed and grown our family and have such a diverse career.

I arrived as an early career midwife and have been supported to further my career goals in so many ways. I have been able to practice in the full scope of a midwife, develop skills and knowledge and live in a multi-cultural community. Highlights have included, Midwife of the Year in 2011, being at the primary level of water birthing, home birthing and providing care for families in the Midwifery Group Practice, including being present for the birth of consequent siblings and in fact generations.

Work colleagues come to Alice Springs Hospital for varied lengths of time, but they all bring elements to add to the context of midwifery in Central Australia. The uniqueness and variety of the work is what has kept this Gemini working here.

Work is a large part of your life and I can say the Maternity Unit has provided nourishment and flexibility over the past 35 years.
