Department of Education

I began employment with the Department of Education at Darwin High School in 1991 after relocating from Victoria. I worked in the science faculty. It was a great place to start my teaching career with a terrific mix of old and young teachers.

In 1993 I transferred with my partner Pozy to Maningrida CEC and took up a position teaching the High School boy's class. Maningrida was a spectacular place to work and live and I spent the next nine years there in various roles including classroom teacher, senior teacher Homelands then Assistant Principal, High School and Homelands. We started our family there and had two children who were well loved by our fellow community members.

In 2002 we relocated to Bali as part of the department's exchange program, and I taught English at a government school in Karangasem. This was definitely a career highlight.

Our family moved back to Darwin in 2003 and I secured a position at Nightcliff High School where I worked teaching science until the middle school change of 2007. I was then transferred to Casuarina Senior College and am currently still a teacher there. My journey with teaching in the Top End has been fantastic and I have worked with so many excellent teachers, administration staff and had some great leaders. I have been an active union member and involved in school sport both of which have been very fulfilling.

Whenever I meet new teachers, I always say come to the NT to teach, it will certainly open your eyes and broaden your teaching skills. I have had a full and enjoyable professional life working with our department and am grateful for all the opportunities that have presented themselves to me.
