A role built on trust, culture and community

Tania Parriman is a proud Jabirr Jabirr, Yawuru, Ballardong and Nhanda woman, with strong cultural ties to Broome in Western Australia.

She is a mentor, leader, dedicated family advocate and talented artist.

As an Estate Officer working at the Public Guardian and Trustee office, Tania Parriman’s work goes beyond administration. It’s about supporting Aboriginal people through sensitive and often complex situations with care and respect.

'I advocate for staff and clients, many of whom are Aboriginal people from across the Territory. A big part of my role is making sure estates are managed respectfully and people feel supported.'

Tania’s approach is grounded in empathy, clear communication and building trust.

'Communication is everything. People appreciate being heard and understood, especially when they’re dealing with sensitive and difficult issues.'

For Tania, NAIDOC’s theme '50 Years of Deadly' is about recognising the achievements and strength of Aboriginal people and communities over time.

'It’s about acknowledging the people who’ve made progress and sharing knowledge in the community. I’ve seen how support systems, from mental health to medical support, are helping our mob and making a real difference.'

Tania’s work reflects the values of the 2000s NAIDOC themes: community pride, empowerment and shared responsibility for the future.

'Every case is different. Families can be complex, so you need to communicate with them in a way that works for everyone and brings understanding'

Staying connected to Country also plays a vital role in her wellbeing.

'Being back on Country, on the water or red dirt, helps me reset. That’s what grounds me.'

One of her proudest moments was administering her first estate.

'There were a lot of challenges, but I stayed focused and got it done. Seeing it through from beginning to end, that meant a lot to me and the people I helped.'

Through her work, she continues to support individuals and families while strengthening trust, connection and community. Helping to build a stronger future for the next generation.
